Day one of the block

Monday, January 4, 2010

The National Marathon training block has officially begun.

I headed out this morning for 7 miles… all set to begin the Coach for Coach under the guidance of Coach Moody.  It wasn’t exactly how I would have liked the first run to go, as Lake Effect hit last night, and throughout the morning, to leave the streets buried under a ton of white stuff (aka snow for all you southern).

I was out the door at 6:05am to head over and pick up Gibbons.  We preceded to shuffle our way around campus and some surrounding streets until the watch told us the misery was over.  Our pace… 8:10 per mile… our effort… 6:20 per mile.

Then, my reward… shovel the driveway, shower, and drive 1:40 (usually 27 minutes) to the office… there, being greeted by all the work that stacked up over my 19 days of vacation.

In the end, it was a great first day back at work, and the craziness of catching up only lasted through lunch, then I was back on track and rolling forward.

* Tonight, I headed out again (the streets and footing were not much better), for another 6 miles and some (attempted) strides.  Tomorrow morning at 6:40am however, I will get some respite from the snow, as I will be indoors for some 400 meter repeats.

* Took the time last night to GMap the National Marathon course.  The course map on the website is more for looks rather than function.  I will note that this map is not 100% accurate (I don't think), but it's close enough: Click here to view the course map.

* I've been busy of late working on some training programs of my own creation for Captain and TK.   Captain is gearing up for a half marathon in February, fresh off his December marathon PR and TK is training for a March marathon, with hopes that the result and base will propel him towards bigger and better things.

TK is a absolute freak, and setting up his training program is a bit tricky - but fun!  He's super talented and very accomplished from his collegiate and post-collegiate days, but has some injury history and has taken some time 'away' from serious training.

* I have a big trip to Florida coming up next week for work.  I fly out Sunday and come back on Friday.  This trip will provide a major hit to my training, but Coach Moody and I accounted for it, and after the last few weeks, it'll be good timing for a down week of recovery before pushing forward.

* Timothy
