December 12th Marathoners...
Wednesday, December 2, 2009
I have been 'advising' two of my close friends as they are both preparing to toe the line on December 12th in their respective marathons.
First there's the Captain... Paul Mainwaring, he is racing the Thunder Road Marathon in Charlotte, NC. Paul has had a ridiculous last 14 months - dating back to last September when he came up to Cleveland and set a PR in the half-marathon. Since then however, it's been nothing but a battle... mostly against bad luck and bad breaks (literally).
You can read all about how Paul got to this point... his injuries, his decision, his training - and see first hand how he is fit and ready to roll - at his blog: click here.
The second marathoner on December 12th is a college teammate and housemate of mine - Andy Dohanos. Andy is running the Kiawah Marathon, along with another college teammate of mine.
The story behind Andy's marathon is a pretty cool... after college at BW he went on to West Virginia for his Master's and then out to Utah for the Ph.d program... and he has been living in Salt Lake City since. He trained on and off but made the commitment about a year ago that Kiawah 2009 was his long term focus.
To make a long story short his progression has been awesome... in late October he ran a 10 miler... his first 10 miler since our junior year of college (8 years ago). Since then he has done two 13 milers, a 16 miler, and then this past weekend a 20 miler.
His build up from late summer to now has gone great... and it all came together last month as he posted several weeks in the 40+ miles range as well as a week over 50 miles.
For both, the work is done... just some finishing touches and race day will be here before they know it. December 12th is going to be a great day for both these guys - I can't wait to see the results!
* I have been sick since Saturday afternoon and it's been pretty wicked. I typically get sick about once every 3 years (like father like son... my Dad has the immune system of a cement block), but when I do get sick, it's usually pretty bad.
This has been no exception. The real kicker has been... as I was feeling better and better, my voice was getting worse and worse. By Monday I had absolutely no voice and the people at work were loving it - as you can only imagine.
Right now I'm slowly nearing 100%... the energy level is back up and I feel about 90% overall... the voice is lagging a bit behind, still about 3-4 days away from having that completely back.
* With the Coach for Cash Contest reigning omnipresent on this blog... I figured I would throw up my mileage for the months leading up to Columbus 2008 and compare that to what I hope is the monthly buildup for National Marathon 2010.
Obviously the 2010 mileage will vary depending upon the contest winner and what they have in store for me - so the National buildup is 'ideal', and 'ballpark' at the same time...
Columbus buildup:
June 2008: 191 miles
July 2008: 350 miles
August 2008: 425 miles
September 2008: 386 miles
October 2008: Race month... irrelevant.
National buildup:
November 2009: 280 miles
December 2009: 375+ miles
January 2010: 400+ miles
February 2010: 375+ miles
March 2010: Race month... irrelevant.
The point I wanted to make / show is to those saying there isn't enough time to build a proper training program, etc. First of all, it's not like I don't have 16 straight years of competing running and training under my belt... I'm not starting from scratch here.
Secondly, as I noted several time now, I decided to run the Columbus Marathon less than 2 weeks before race day. So, I wasn't exactly training with an intended purpose through July and August of 2008.
Again, I hope to build a decent base this month (December) of 375+ miles... I should be plenty fit come January 4th and the start of the winner's program to handle just about anything that gets thrown my way.
It's going to be fun.
And speaking of the winner's program... I have received 12 total submissions so far. Two have been posted, and I have 10 more ready and waiting in my email inbox. Thanks to everyone for the thoughtful responses, time, and effort thus far. It's much appreciated.
