The short road to Richmond
Wednesday, November 4, 2009
I posted my first double in over 9 weeks yesterday (10 miles in the AM, 5 mile in the PM)... as I slowly continue to ramp up my training. True to form - at least dating back to 2002 - once the temperatures start dipping into the 30s or below, my mileage typically starts to climb.
Jason Ream and I have talked many times about this phenomena... we seem to post some of our best running during the dreadful winter months in Cleveland. Based on where I'm at and where I want to get... this will, hopefully, once again be the case.
* Head's marathon (Richmond) is now 10 days away, so the taper will officially start Friday... 8 days out from race day. Considering the major setback she had 3.5 weeks ago, I think she's in a good place right now.
Ideally, whenever one throws themselves out there and endures the time sapping commitment of marathon training - the goal would be to PR. But with this only being her 2nd marathon (a 2:57 debut at Chicago 2005) and the fact that she has only raced a handful since then (consisting of mostly 5ks)... we have some more milder goals come November 14th.
However, if anyone runner I've ever known is able to make big things happen on race day when the training log may 'predict' a performance of lesser brilliance, it's Head.
* BW just announced that the school will be adding a small wind turbine to campus... below is the intro to the news release and link to the article.

I am both happy to see this 'progressive' thinking by BW and shocked that no other school / college in Ohio has already jumped on this 'environmental' opportunity.
* TimothyWind Turbine Furthers College Commitment to Sustainability
Construction is beginning at Baldwin-Wallace College on what should be the first wind turbine on an Ohio college campus. The project is scheduled to be completed shortly after Thanksgiving.
This wind turbine, which is being purchased by the students at B-W for approximately $37,000, is considered small by industry standards, according to B-W president Richard Durst. It will provide energy output for the typical U.S. single family home that will be added to the B-W energy grid.
“We hope this wind turbine will serve as a ‘model’ of new renewable energy technology and symbolize the College's commitment to leadership in sustainability,” said Durst. Read More... click here.
