Dogs love candy...

Halloween night and TJ had a blast trick or treating. It's amazing how his Halloweens have progressed for Bigs.
The first year he was almost 1 years old and we made it 4 houses. Last year we had a good time roaming the streets with the Mainwarings, but TJ wanted nothing to do with anyone wearing a mask or any sorts (scary or not). This year however he was all about candy, and going to as many houses as possible... and as quickly as possible. He didn't let anything get in his way - and he has a huge bucket of candy to prove it.
The photo to the right is after two houses... he soon had this bucket overflowing after his assault on the neighborhood.
* Last night TJ, Head, and I headed up to BW to watch the Berea (Head's Alma mater) vs. Midpark high school football game... these schools are major arch rivals as they used to be a combined school, they still share the same school district, not to mention - within the next 3-4 years... they will once again be combined into one school.
Midpark won by 40 points... not exactly a great game. However, TJ had fun - watching the game and watching the bands - and his favorite part was eating a hot dog. It helped that it was 70 degrees outside, can't beat that for October 30th in Northeast Ohio.
* I've hit a bit of a slump with my running the last few days. Thursday night I had a rough 10 miler. Yesterday I ran with Head as she did a workout in prep for Richmond and I was barely hanging on after 6 miles - I can honestly say, this run was the worst run I have ever had. Today, was only slightly better... did 4 miles easy just to gauge the energy systems.
Tomorrow morning I'll be heading out once again with Head for her final long run. She's doing 18... I hope to get in at least 12. We'll see if this is temporary and something I snap out of.

Great job Mr. Gibbons. I would also like to extend congtatulations to the BW women's cross country team for their 1st place victory as a team (16th OAC victory in program history). In addition, the Yellow Jacket women had six runners earn all-conference honors. Fairly impressive.
Yes, congrats to the BW women as well.
However All-OAC should not be confused with ‘conference honorable mention’. Although semantics, it is more accurate.
On that note, this is not youth sports, where everyone needs to be deemed a ‘winner’… IN MY OPINION, the OAC conference has made a mistake by changing their award system in the last few years and giving away ‘honors’ to the top 18 athletes, considering that the race only consists of ~150 plus/minus. That means 10-15% of the athletes achieve some level of notoriety.
With 18-22 years old, that seems unacceptable. This is collegiate athletics – 14th should not be considered an achievement with only 150 (or so) competing. The job of collegiate athletics, especially DIII, should be to prepare student-athletes for the ‘real world’, not somehow designate ‘everyone’ a winner just for toeing the line.
Up until the mid-2000s… only top-7 finishers were awards ‘All-OAC’… and there was no 2nd team or honorable mention.
The idea is to provide a carrot… inject motivation to achieve.
The lower the standards, the more awards… but the less meaningful.
It's funny how they changed it for both the men and women's teams though. And the women had D'Arcy Hlavin placing 3rd and Kim Chinn placing 5th, they both still would have gotten an All-OAC performance even before the mid-2000s.
ABSOLUTLEY! And it's still a great honor. I'm not trying to take anything away from the athletes that go out and give it their all.
Trust me, I toed that line - had success and failure - I know what it's all about.
I'm just saying, the conference shouldn't 'reward' 15% of the finishers. It's not the athletes fault... not BW's issue... it's an OAC Conference problem.
All coaches can do is coach. All runners can do is race. That remains the same. They do their job - and I have no problem with that.
Anonymous... please stop back tomorrow - as I am working on a post to explain my thoughts on this a bit clearer. It'll be posted late tonight. Thanks.
